Scarecrows 2026

Well, the time is ticking away, and we are getting closer to our 2026 Scarecrow weekend. Plans are well underway and we are all looking forward to seeing Bromyard buzzing with ideas for Scarecrows. This year we have some new entries but there is still time for you to add yours.

Firstly, a few reminders.

  • The Scarecrow Weekend is Friday June 12th-Sunday June 14th.

  • Our theme this year is “Heros or Villains”.

  • The Parade will take place on Friday evening. It will start from St. Peter’s Churchyard at 7.00pm; the Scarecrows and their entourages can assemble from 6.30pm

  • The Scarecrow entourages will be judged after the parade.

  • The parade will end on the Town Green where each scarecrow and entourage will be stewarded into their allotted space.

  • A bucket collection will take place during the parade.

  • Prize giving for the entourages will take place on the Town Green. There are 4 prizes of £50 to be awarded. We have absolutely no input into the judging and the judge’s decision is final.

  • Saturday and Sunday: The Scarecrows will be out for viewing from 11.00a.m. During Saturday morning the judges will walk around the scarecrows and award 3 prizes of £75, £50 and £25 plus certificates for those who are Highly Commended.

  • Competition booklets for both adults and children will be available from the kiosk outside the Leisure Centre between 11.00 and 5.00 on Saturday and Sunday. Complete answers need to be returned to the kiosk by 5.00 on Sunday. No late entries will be accepted.

  • The Competition booklets will contain the cryptic clues for adults to name the scarecrows. The children’s competition will have clues on the scarecrow boards by each scarecrow.

  • There will be a map available showing where each scarecrow is. We ask that all scarecrows are placed in their allotted space as shown on the map, otherwise you might know where your scarecrow is but no one else will!

  • Sponsorship: If you would like someone to sponsor your scarecrow we will label it on your scarecrow, in our competition booklet and list it in our sales kiosk. Cheques are payable to Scarecrow Festival Business account: Sort code 30-94-99. Account number 1817598

  • Please contact Lynne before starting to construct your scarecrow as we try to avoid having more than one with the same name.

  • On the Saturday evening, we will be holding our annual scarecrow supper which this year is to have a slightly different format. There will be a two-course hot meal (so that will guarantee we have scorching weather). The cost will be £12.50 a ticket (please bring your own drinks). This year your ticket price will include: a quiz, a game of Irish Bingo and a Bingo card, all of which will have a prize.

Every year we are truly amazed with the effort and creativity which is put into building scarecrows. Some people create “sets “in their gardens to give their scarecrows a whole “home” to inhabit for two days. Please be assured that, as beautiful as these sets are, our judges judge the scarecrow and not the surroundings.

We are very grateful for the time and effort which is put in by all of you without which we would not have a festival.

We would like to thank Bromyard and Winslow Town Council who over the last few years have given us a grant which we use towards paying for insurance and prize money.   The only income we receive, other than the grant, is generated through the bucket collection, programmes and the supper. In the past we have used any “spare” money to support the Festivals Association and to buy flags for the town.

As with most of the events in Bromyard, it is a small group of people who run it.

As a Scarecrow Committee we would like to thank Bromyard Glass - who are actually based in Leominster. Every year we are kindly loaned their van (plus driver) this makes our lives very much easier over the weekend moving the kiosk around not to mention acting as a dormitory for several scarecrows on the Saturday Night! Thank you also to the Bromyard  Light Brigade who get their trailer out of its summer hibernation and move boards about on the days leading up to scarecrow weekend; to Emma Bouston who prints all our programmes; to the Speed Festival who loan us their card machines;  to the Rev. Phil for allowing us to fill the churchyard with scarecrows (one year some of them slept overnight in the church); and to our stewards for their help in getting unruly scarecrows (not to mention the entourages) through the town on Friday evening. Thank you also all of those motorists who may be driving up Sherford Street on the Friday evening only to find that the road is blocked by a scarecrow parade for 20 minutes!

We are so sorry that not everyone can win a prize; that’s just the way it is.  However, please do come along and join us over the Scarecrow weekend. Cheer the Scarecrows and entourages as they parade up the street on Friday evening - take a walk around the scarecrows on the Saturday and Sunday - or maybe join us for supper on the Saturday evening.

It always takes a lot of hard thinking (not to mention the odd drink or two) to come up with the themes each year. If you have a good idea for a theme for 2027, please do let us know.

Keep an eye out for more weekend information and the Supper menu coming soon!
